This movie talked about some of the different medical systems and tried to argue the point of how some medical systems are just wrong. Sicko focused on Canadian, American, French and British medical systems and how they are all so different from one another.
It first started talking about the American medical system, just from watching the first few minutes of this I noticed how different it really was from the Canadian medical system. In the sates you don’t normally receive health benefits with your job like you would with most Canadian jobs. Instead you have to purchase health insurance through an HMO. When you apply to get this insurance you will sometimes be declined it if you have an ongoing heath problem or something that could potentially cost the insurance company a lot of money or they will just charge you an outrages amount that is way over what they should really be charging you. If you claim for money with the insurance company that your with a medical director will look over all of your medical history documents and try and find anything wrong with the documents or something you didn’t tell them at the beginning or something you didn’t know about. If they find anything like that they will not give you the money. You can even be declined medical treatment if you are not covered or can’t pay for it even if you will die without it. They try to get money out of you any way they can, there is a rule that you have to approve the ambulance to take you to the hospital or else you will have to pay for it, this is even if you had just been in an extreme car accident and you are unconscious. Somehow they still die each year in the sates because they don’t have health insurance. I feel that the way America runs their medical systems is completely unreasonable and it puts a lot of people in hard situations because they were declined money or medical services. I think that if you aren’t well enough to go home you shouldn’t be expect you to approve it before they take you away from the scene. 18,000 people forced out of the hospital.
The British and French medical systems are pretty similar. For the British medical system everything is reasonably priced. Pills are about ten dollars a bottle and if you are over sixty it’s free. Most medical services also don’t cost you anything unlike the sates. In France everything is free, medical services/treatments, medications and doctor visits are free. They even have doctor’s that will come right to your house instead of going to a doctor’s office. Other things like daycare, university and nannies are also virtually free. I think the ways that the British and French medical systems are set up are very fair even though the taxes may be higher than Canada’s or the Sates. I think everyone should be given the medical treatment they need no matter what the circumstances are.
As far as Canada you may still have to pay some money if your health benefits don’t cover it all. In Canada you will also not be kicked out of a hospital because you cannot pay the fees.
